Health Wagon Receives NANOE’s Best Practice Charity Award

May 22, 2023 – Las Vegas, NV – The Health Wagon, who provides compassionate, quality health care to the medically underserved people in the mountains of Appalachia, is the 2023 winner of NANOE’s Best Practice Charity Award. After a thorough and significant review of several nominated charities, NANOE’s Board of Directors declared The Health Wagon this year’s recipient. NANOE’s prestigious commendation was not bestowed upon The Health Wagon because of the myriad of primary and specialty medical care services they provide to impoverished families across the Southeast nor the 36,000 patient encounters they performed in 2023. Rather, they were awarded this honor because of the excellence with which The Health Wagon operates their charitable organization.

Founded in 1980 by Sister Bernadette “Bernie” Kenny of the order of Medical Missionaries of Mary, the Health Wagon is the oldest mobile clinic in the nation. The Health Wagon started with Sister Bernie delivering health care to Appalachian Mountain residents from her Volkswagen Beetle serving one family at a time.

The Health Wagon does not bill for services and is sustained by grants and donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Services are rendered free of charge. Led by President and CEO Dr. Teresa Owens Tyson, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC, FAANP, The Health Wagon promotes the mission of providing quality, affordable, accessible care to all with an emphasis on the medically underserved.

The Health Wagon hosts the largest health outreach of its kind in the nation. Their expert team of clinicians meet the unique challenges of delivering primary, specialty, dental, and vision care to the medically underserved in poverty-stricken areas of rural Appalachia. Their mobile clinics visit 13 sites in three states while simultaneously serving thousands of patients via their multiple stationary clinics. Most recently The Health Wagon Team was an instrumental partner in the first-ever FAA-approved drone delivery of medications in the U.S.
